Super Mario Bros. movie actor Bob Hoskins died this week after being hospitalized with pneumonia, his publicist confirmed to The Chicago Tribune today. He was 71.

Hoskins rose to prominence through movies like Who Framed Roger Rabbit and Hook, but gamers know him best as the man who played Mario in 1993's infamous Super Mario Bros. In a 2007 interview, Hoskins recalled what a trainwreck the Super Mario Bros. movie was.

"The worst thing I ever did? Super Mario Brothers. It was a f**kin' nightmare. The whole experience was a nightmare. It had a husband-and-wife team directing, whose arrogance had been mistaken for talent. After so many weeks their own agent told them to get off the set! F**kin' nightmare. F**kin' idiots."

Hoskins was nominated for an Oscar in 1987 for Mona Lisa. He has appeared in dozens of films, the most recent of which was 2012's Snow White And The Huntsman. Hoskins retired from acting in 2012, explaining at the time that he was suffering from Parkinson's disease.
