Epic Games Shows Off Unreal Engine 4 On Mobile and It Looks Incredible

During Google's recent I/O conference for application developers, Gears of War creator Epic Games presented a short demo showing off what Google's mobile technology can do.

Running on an Nvidia Tegra K1 processor, the demo involves cinematic views of a damp corridor and two robots. The robots walk around and eventually stop at an arcade cabinet, where they begin to play a Flappy Bird clone.

Notably, the demo was made for a high-end PC and quickly ported to the mobile chipset. Nvidia claims that its K1 processor outperforms both the Xbox 360 and the PlayStation 3, and with Google's new Android Extension Pack that adds tessellation, geometry shaders, and more, Epic says it can bring high-fidelity graphics to mobile.

"Epic's Unreal Engine 4 'Rivalry' project demonstrated at Google I/O sho ws what's possible when PC-class gaming technologies and performance are brought to mobile devices," Epic explains in the video's description. "In less than three weeks we ported content built for high-end PC and the DirectX 11 graphics API to Android and Google's AEP (Android Extension Pack) extensions for ES 3.1. Developers can deliver incredible graphical complexity on a mobile chipset thanks to K1 and AEP!"

Although this is only a tech demo and likely will look better than most final products, it is still impressive. In my opinion, it certainly looks better than many PS3 and 360 games. The lighting and textures specifically look great. What do you think about the convergence of mobile and console graphics? Let us know in the comments!
