Lack of Competitive Multiplayer in Assassin's Creed Unity Explained

Ubisoft has detailed its reasons why it decided not to include competitive multiplayer in this year's Assassin's Creed Unity.

Starting with Assassin's Creed: Brotherhood, four consecutive Assassin's Creed titles have featured a variety of competitive modes. But this year, the developer has chosen to focus its resources on creating the co-op mode in Unity instead of any competitive modes.

The developer explains that, as its ambitions for co-op grew, it had to shift its concentration to that instead of attempting to create traditional Assassin's Creed multiplayer. "We developed core mechanics more on cooperation in stead of confrontation," Unity's level designer Bruno St-Andre said to GamingBolt. "So we put a lot of effort into redefining the fights so that multiple players can actually engage in them and have a better strategy against the AI, which reacts differently each time. Same thing for navigation and same thing for the stealth. All of our effort and our decisions were based on this topic. We re ally wanted to be focused on that."

St-Andre also explained that demand for co-op in Assassin's Creed has been present for the years that the franchise has existed. Since Ubisoft has finally decided to make the mode this year, it wants to devote its time to co-op: "It's been asked nearly every year by the fans to be able to play co-op and finally we're able to deliver it with next-gen consoles. That was real ly our focus and we're heading strong in that direction."

GameSpot editors were encouraged by what they saw of Unity at this year's E3 conference. The game will be released on October 28 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC.
