The upcoming movie based on 2005 PlayStation 2 game Shadow of the Colossus is moving forward today, as a director for the film has been named. The Hollywood Reporter says Spanish director Andres (Andy) Muschietti, known for the 2013 horror flick Mama, is taking the reins.

The Shadow of the Colossus movie has been in the works since 2009, and at one point, Chronicle director Josh Trank was tapped to sit in the director's chair. The movie is being penned by Hanna writer Seth Lochhead, but there is no word yet on a cast or a release date.

Plot details for the Shadow of the Colossus movie have not been disclosed. But if it follows the game's story, you can expect it to follow a young warrior who brings his fallen love to a faraway temple in hopes of restoring her to health. According to a mysterious presence that dwells within the temple's walls, the only way to save this girl is to hunt down and destroy the 16 massive beasts that roam the surrounding lands.

Shadow of the Colossus was developed by Japanese studio Team Ico, which is now working on The Last Guardian (insert comment about game's protracted development here).

The Shadow of the Colossus movie is one of many video game movies currently in development. Sony is also making a Last of Us movie, while Ubisoft has a total of six films in the pipeline, including movies based on Assassin's Creed, Watch Dogs, and Splinter Cell. In addition, Konami is moving forward on a film based on Metal Gear Solid, Blizzard Entertainment has its Warcraft movie, and an Angry Birds film is scheduled for 2016. And just recently, the Dead Rising movie got a director, an d the next Resident Evil movie was delayed because lead actress Milla Jovovich is having a baby.
