Warner Bros Trademark Reveals Plan to Launch Digital Platform

Written By blogger on Monday, September 8, 2014 | 5:28 AM

A collection of trademark filings suggest that publisher Warner Bros. is ready to launch a digital games platform called WB Play.

The filings, unearthed by The Escapist, have led to speculation that the Batman Arkham Knight and Mortal Kombat X publisher could be ready to launch a games and media subscription service--similar to EA Access, which offers a range of AAA games to play for $5 per month.

However, the details within the trademark descriptions do not mention a subscription service, and the text is ambiguous. Among the notes are mentions of:

  • Downloading virtua l goods
  • Downloading electronic strategy and instructional guides
  • Audio and video recordings in the fields of video games
  • Downloadable multimedia containing artwork, text, audio, etc

It appears from the filings that WB Play could be similar to Ubisoft's Uplay digital platform. Warner Bros declined to comment when approached by GameSpot.

However, the publisher already appears to be soft-launching the service behind the scenes. The official website for the upcoming action adventure game, Shadow of Mordor, displays the WB Play logo in the top-left corner of the page.

Shadow of Mordor, which releases on September 30 in North America and October 3 across Europe, could be the first game that in troduces the WB Play service.

Warner Bros also publishes popular games series such as Batman Arkham and Mortal Kombat.
