Return of the Obra Dinn

Lucas Pope, the creator of the IGF Grand Prize winning Papers, Please, has revealed his new game over on TIGSource, as PC Gamer spotted. Titled Return of the Obra Dinn, it will be a first-person mystery game set on an East Indiaman merchant ship in 1808. And as the picture above suggests, it will rendered in 1-bit graphics, inspired by Pope's affinity for the old Mac Plus.

While details are naturally pretty sparse at the moment (as you'd expect from a mystery game), Pope says it won't be your typical 'collect items and look for clues' type adventure game. There is a cool gameplay hook which will make things interesting, but Pope doesn't want to go into that until its closer to release.

So what exactly happens in Return of the Obra Dinn? I'll just let Pope explain it:

In 1802, the merchant ship "Obra Dinn" set out from London for the Orient with over 200 tons of trade goods. Six months later it hadn't met its rendezvous point at the Cape of Good Hope and was declared lost at sea. Early this morning of October 14th, 1808, the Obra Dinn drifted into port with sails damaged and no visible crew. As insurance adjustor for the East India Company's London Office, find means to board the ship and recover the captain's logbook for assessment.

A creepy Marie Celeste style disappearance? I am right on board. Pun not intended. Or was it? It's a mystery!
