Ahead of Tropico 5's release on Friday, publisher Kalypso announced today that the PC version is setting records for the company. The game has netted four times the number of preorders than predecessor Tropico 4 (20 11), the company says. Specific preorder figures for Tropico 5 were not disclosed.

Kalypso also points out that Tropico 5 has sat atop the Amazon pre-sale charts for "many weeks" and that preorders on Steam are performing ahead of expectation.

The digital version of Tropico 5 for PC launches May 23, with a retail version to follow on June 3. Xbox 360 and Mac ve rsions are scheduled to release this summer, while a PlayStation 4 version will be available this fall. There's no mention of an Xbox One version.

Tropico 5, developed by Haemimont Games, takes players on a journey from the 19th century to the 21st. You'll play through colonial times, World War 1 and World War 2, the Great Depression, the Cold War, and up to modern times and beyond. The game also introduces a series-first multiplayer mode, allowing up to four players to build their own cities, and then decide if they want to share resources and supplies or go to war with one another.
