The newer the game, the better the support.

So some good news for fans of Civilization 4: 2K have released, via Steam, the patch that you'll need to migrate the game's multiplayer from the dying GameSpy service to Steamworks. "The game functions identically to the previous GameSpy version with the exception that the "Direct IP" option has been removed as it is no longer supported," a note on the 2K support page says. People with physical copies of Civ 4 can lodge a support ticket to get the update as well and save games should be untouched by the patch.
That's the good news. Now for the not so good: there's no ETA on when the migration for Civilization 3 will be complete, meaning it'll be highly likely that old-school fans will continue to go without for a while. The first Borderlands is scheduled to get online functionality again "in Summer 2014″, but that's effectively as good as writing "soon".
On the flip side, while Steamworks might not be available for Civ 3, it does mean the Direct IP option is still available. I don't know if this means you can still get a game – does it still try to go through the GameSpy system? Let us know in the comments.
