Full-Length Dead Rising Movie in the Works, Will Debut on Crackle

Capcom's popular zombie series Dead Rising is now the latest video game franchise to get a movie deal. Variety reports that a full-length digital film based on the series is in development and will debut on Sony's Crackle streaming service. The film will become the first project created by Legendary Digital Media, the offshoot of Warcraft and Godzilla studio Legendary Pictures.

Though there's no word yet on a director or cast for the Dead Rising movie, Variety reports that Transformers franchise producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura will serve as executive producer on the film. Tim Carter will write the script alongside Tomas Harlan for Contradiction Films, which recently produced the Mortal Kombat Legacy digital series. No release date was mentioned.

Here's how Variety sets up the story for the Dead Rising movie: "Dead Rising takes place during a large-scale zombie outbreak. When a mandatory government vaccine fails to stop the infection from spreading, the four leads must evade infection while also pursuing the root of the epidemic, with all signs pointing to a government conspiracy."

After its initial run on Crackle, the Dead Rising movie will be released on DVD, TV, and video on demand. The most recent Dead Rising game was Xbox One launch title Dead Rising 3, which is coming to PC on September 5.

There are a number of video game movie projects currently in the works, including films based on franchises like The Last of Us, Assassin's Creed, Resident Evil, and Warcraft.
