Microsoft: We Like Competition, Sony Will Have a Good E3

In the lead up to next week's E3, Xbox boss Phil Spencer has spoken out to say he's confident that competitor Sony will have a strong showing at the industry event, which is now just days away. Asked by a fan if he thought Sony was "intimidated" by Spencer's new role as Head of Xbox, Spencer said he doesn't thin k this is the case. "I don't think Sony is intimidated. Sony is [a] great band and strong team," he said. "Competition is good. They'll have a good E3."

Spencer was promoted to Head of Xbox at the end of March, at the time promising an "incredible new chapter" for gaming. In his new role, he oversees the Xbox and Xbox Live platforms, as well as creative teams at Microsoft Studios. Shortly following his appointment to top Xbox boss, Microsoft announced a $100 price cut for the Xbox One (by removing Kinect) and just today introduced Games with Gold benefits for Xbox One owners.

Microsoft recently completed its final rehearsal, in Redmond at least, for its E3 press conference, which will be held the morning of Monday, June 9. Spencer said on Twitter that the Xbox team is determined to make this show one to remember. "There is a renewed sense of belief [that] we are on a good path here; good vibe in the halls," he said.

Finally, a fan asked Spencer to respond to industry analyst Michael Pachter's recent comments about what Microsoft will show at E3. "Ahh that Michael Pachter guy. He's a friend," Spencer said. "I'll see him after our briefing. We'll see if our show matches his predictions."

During the latest episode of "Pach-Attack!", Pachter "assumed" that Microsoft will spend a lot of time talking about non-game content like original TV programming from Xbox Entertainment Studios. His reasoning? Mainstream media will attend E3 and they are more likely to cover news about TV content than games specifically because editors for those publications often don't know Gears of War from God of War, Pachter said. Pachter also contends that Micro soft will announce a $199 Xbox 360 during E3 and talk about why the new $399 Xbox One is every bit as strong an offer as the $399 PlayStation 4.

Time and again, Microsoft has maintained that its E3 press conference this year will be all about games. Microsoft and Sony will hold their E3 press conferences on Monday, June 9. GameSpot will carry live-streams of both events, as well as interviews and instant-analysis video features immediately following the shows.
