After teasing last night that a new PlayStation 4 update was "coming soon," Sony has now released the latest system update, version 1.71.
Unfortunately, whereas the last update introduced a number of new features, the 1.71 update is not a feature-heavy one. The single item listed when installi ng the update reads, "System software stability during use of some features has been improved." Sony has yet to provide any specifics on what these features are, nor has it updated its support page to make mention of 1.71.
The 1.70 update, released at the end of April, added the ability to change the DualShock 4 light bar's brightness, SHAREfactory (a video editing tool), support for saving Twitch or Ustream broadcasts, and more. It was the seventh system update to be distributed through the PlayStation Network since the PS4's launch in November, some of which have, like 1.71, been focused exclusively on system stability.
PS4 sales eclipsed 7 millio n units worldwide as of April 6. The company hasn't provided any further sales updates since then, but Ubisoft CEO Yves Guillemot said last month that the third-party publisher expects PS4 and Xbox One to combine to sell 30 million units by the end of March 2015.
The system will be getting a major new feature this summer in PlayStation Now, Sony's streaming game service. It's currently in beta and will be released on PS4, PS3, and PlayStation Vita, as well as certain Bravia TVs. We should be learning more about its launch, possibly as well as some of the new features Sony has planned for future PS4 updates, during Sony's E3 press conference next week, scheduled to take place this Monday, June 9, at 6PM Pacific.
