Sony Uncertain About Future of AAA Western Games on Vita

Sony recently touted that between the PlayStation 4, PlayStation 3, and PlayStation Vita the company has sold over 100 million systems, but it admits that the Vita might not be the platform of choice for AAA Western games.

"I certainly think you'll still see [Vita] as a AAA machine in Japan where it has a different function with the console dynamic of the marketplace," PlayStation boss Andrew House told IGN. "That for me is a given. It's hard to say in terms of the other markets."

House echoed the sentiment from Director of Product Planning and Platform Software Innovation at Sony Computer Entertainment Don Mesa, who in May said that the economics for AAA games on Vita "simply don't work."

Instead, House suggests that Vita owners will be able to get their AAA fix by taking advantage of the device's remote play feature. "I think remote play is still in its nascent stages, I think we need to have better understanding," he said. "We know a lot of players are embracing it and using it and seem to like the experience a lot, but necessarily that changes the dynamic. You know, if you can play your PlayStation 4 content at will on Vita, then does that obviate the necessity of having AAA content or not?"
