Nintendo plans on offering an official accessory that allows GameCube controllers--the preferred choice of many Super Smash Bros. players--to be used with the Wii U. That leaves 3DS owners looking forward to the new Super Smash Bros. with fewer control options, as the only way to play the 3DS version is with the system's built-in controls. That is, unless you're one modder, who has come up with a way to use a GameCube controller wi th his 2DS.
The modded system's unseemly back.As documented on the 3DS Capture forums (via Tiny Cartridge), a modder by the name of loopy has devised a way to connect a standard GameCube controller to the handheld. The video below documents the results, as loopy shows Super Street Fighter IV: 3D Edition being played (in 2D) with the external controller.
"What I do to amuse myself," loopy says of the project. "I repurposed an old capture board. Along with the standard buttons, the GC analog stick is also mapped to the 3DS d-pad . C-stick also goes to Y/X/B/A."
Even with the issues of the ugly-looking back and the 2DS screen being so small that you couldn't sit far away, there will no doubt be Super Smash Bros. players interested in trying this for themselves. Unfortunately, loopy doesn't plan on selling the mod to the public. "If I were to sell it, I'd just make a DIY kit (bare board), it would be very cheap to make," he explains. "Selling it is probably not worth the trouble. Installing it isn't simple and I wouldn't want to deal with all the botched installs."
If there were a way to use a GameCube controller with 3DS--be it an official solution or a mod like this--would you be interested? Let us know in the comments.
