If, like me, you don't have the patience to perfectly recreate your looks in a game's character customization system, NBA 2K15 is offering a fine substitute: You can now simply scan your face into the game.
This new face-scanning technology is being implemented in the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 versions of 2K15. In order to do so, you'll obviously need the respective console's camera. (Fortunately, buyers of the Kinect-less Xbox One will be able to begin buying standalone Kinects just before 2K15 goes on sale.)
The video above demonstrates the process of scanning your face; basically, you'll get very close (6-12 inches) to the camera and slowly turn your head 30 degrees to the left and right. According to 2K, this only takes about 30 seconds in total, though that assumes everything goes smoothly.
Once your face has been scanned, the game will build a custom head based on that data. While it's not the first game to do something like this--I recall Rainbow Six: Vegas makin g an abomination out of my head back in the day--2K says this process "isn't capturing an image. It's capturing the 3D model of your entire face, which brings more realism that any system before."
With your face in the game, you'll be able to tweak your looks, giving you the opportunity to perform a rhinoplasty (or whatever else) on your virtual self. You c an see more of this in the image gallery below.
In addition to the video demonstration, 2K today released the quirky video you see above starring Houston Rockets guard James Harden.
NBA 2K15 launches on October 7 for Xbox One, PlayStation 4, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and PC.
