After breaking launch day sales records for Ubisoft, the publisher announced today that its open-world action game Watch Dogs sold through more than 4 million units during its first week. Sales at that level make Watch Dogs the "best-selling new IP at launch across the video game industry." Not only that, but Ubisoft says Watch Dogs is now its best-selling game of all time in terms of first-week sales.
"With such strong sales momentum and positive feedback from gamers, Watch Dogs has p ositioned itself as the must-have game of the moment," Ubisoft marketing executive Tony Key said. "We're really proud of this achievement, and are confident that the Watch Dogs brand has a promising future."
Though Watch Dogs may be off to a hot start, it still needs to sell 2 million more copies to match Ubisoft's expectation of 6 million lifetime sales. That's the same mark that the original Assassin's Creed sold in its lifetime. Ubisoft also announced today that Watch Dogs' free companion app, ctOS Mobile, has now been downloaded more than 1 million times.
Watch Dogs launched for Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3, PlayStation 4 , and PC on May 27. The Wii U version is coming this fall, Ubisoft reiterated today. The game's release last week wasn't a total success however, as various issues with Uplay marred the game at launch, preventing some users from accessing multiplayer or other online features. Other issues, on PC specifically, locked players out of the game entirely in some circumstances. Conservative American radio and TV host Glenn Beck has also criticized Watch Dogs for promoting hacking.
Watch Dogs took 5.5 years to develop. While there has been talk of a sequel, if it ever happens it won't take nearly as long to develop, Ubisoft said in April.
